Abstract

1355809 Structural joints P BRUUN 22 April 1971 [1 May 1970] 10827/71 Heading F2M [Also in Division E1] Two large or massive preformed building structural members 1, 2, referred to as slabs, one but not both of which may be formed in situ and either of which may be a large panel, a wall or a wall slab, or a foundation structure, are joined together by providing along an edge face of each slab an elongate recess 8 or 8a and an elongate locking rail having a protruding portion 9α or 10α, the rails on two adjacent slabs being interpenetrably engaged so that each abuts at least parts of the walls of the recess in the other slab, that portion of the rail which enters the recess in the other slab comprising two mutually perpendicular elongate members, the two rails or the two rails in combination with the walls of the two recesses defining a generally cuboid cavity which is filled by an expanded body 16 whereby the slabs are locked together. As shown the rails are of square U- channel cross-section, the identical slabs 1, 2 are formed by facing sheets 3, 4 sandwiching a filler layer 5 with end plates 6 each locating the recess 8 and sealing strips 17 which when the joint is completed are pressed into engagement. In other embodiments (all not shown) the rail may be integral either with the end plate 6 (Figs. 6, 11) or with one facing sheet 3 when optionally the other facing sheet 4 is continued across the end of the slab to provide the end plate (Fig. 17) or this plate is omitted (Fig. 14) or one facing sheet 3 may be omitted and the two slabs may carry rails of different forms (see Figs. 7, 8, not shown). The facing sheets 3, 4 may be of aluminium or plastics covered metal, while the expansible body 16 may be provided by an in situ expanded closed cell polyurethane or polyester foam, an inflatable balloon connectable to a pressure source, or a collapsed evacuated open cell polyurethane foam body enclosed in a continuous air-tight film or a similarly evacuated neoprene container, puncturing of which causes expansion to fill the cavity 15. Specified applications are for joining roofing panels or panels defining the walls of a container or a swimming pool.
