Abstract

1355568 Aerials SAINT-GOBAIN INDUSTRIES 13 Sept 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 42501/71 Heading H4A A windowpane such as a motorcar windscreen supports electrical conductors serving as an aerial system, said conductors being arranged in two separate principal branches of different configurations connected to a common terminal on the windowpane. As described, a windscreen 31, Fig. 4, carries a T-shaped branch comprising a vertical central limb 32 with a horizontal limb 33, and a U-shaped branch with side limbs 34a, 34b. Both branches are connected to a terminal 35, to which a receiver cable may be coupled. The limbs of the U-shaped branch include foldedback portions 38a, 38b, and this branch is mainly effective at lower frequencies, such as those under 20 MHz used for AM broadcasts. The T-shaped branch is mainly effective at higher frequencies, such as those from 80 to 100 MHz used for FM broadcasts. The conductors may be formed by baking lines of metallic silver frit on the surface of a pane, preferably on the inner surface, with widths of from 0À2 to 0À8 mm. Alternatively, wire conductors may be placed on a sheet of plastics material, which is then fixed to a sheet of glass. In other embodiments the extended portions 38a, 38b of the limbs 34a, 34b are replaced by H-shaped members with their bridges vertically disposed (Fig. 5, not shown), or by members running on each side of the T- shaped branch (Fig. 6, not shown), or said extended portions may be omitted (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). An embodiment is also described in which one branch is a closed loop, and the other branch is T-shaped, with its upper horizontal limb lying below the upper horizontal part of the loop (Fig. 1, not shown). A procedure for determining the configuration of such an aerial system by adjusting the geometry of a basic circuit to obtain maximum signals at representative - frequencies in the different bands of operation is also described.
