Abstract

1354693 Microcapsules MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd 11 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39076/70 Heading B8C Fluids and solids are encapsulated by dissolving a water-insoluble, polymerizable monomer in a solvent having a higher affinity for water than for the monomer, dispersing the substance to be encapsulated therein and maintaining the dispersion by agitation whilst progressively introducing water and, at intervals, quantities of a polymerizing agent (for the monomer) dissolved in a solvent having a higher affinity for water than for the monomer, water being introduced until it is present in large excess over the total volume of solvents used, e.g. in a volume ratio of at least 5 : 1, agitation being continued until polymerization of the monomer is substantially complete. The monomer may be an epoxy compound or pre-polymer and the polymerizing agent may be a polyamine or a polyamide. Suitable solvents are acetone, dioxan, diethylene glycol, tetrahydrofuran and C 1-6 aliphatic alcohols. The example describes the encapsulation of magnesium powder in an epoxy resin derived from "Epikote" (Trade Mark) 154.
