Abstract

1360638 Synthetic resin grouting compositions TILE COUNCIL OF AMERICA Inc 25 May 1971 [8 Jan 1971 (2) 15 March 1971] 17003/71 Headings C3B C3P C3R and C3T Aqueous mortar compositions, which do not contain Portland cement and which are suitable for use in grouting applications, have a Brookfield helipath viscosity (measured at 2À5 r.p.m. and at 70-75‹ F.) of from 10,000 to 4,000,000 c.p.s. and comprise a film-forming waterresistant polymer and a water-insoluble filler, provided that, when the polymer is other than a water-dispersible room-temperature cross-linkable polymer, the filler comprises spherical glass particles. In addition to the aforementioned room - temperature cross - linkable polymers, other suitable polymers are coalescent-type polymers. The former type is suitably employed in conjunction with a cross-linking agent or catalyst, and optionally also a water-soluble cellulose derivative as a water-retentive agent, while the coalescent type may be used together with a polyhydric alcohol. Fillers specified are glass, quartz, silica, barytes, limestone, alumina, clays, diatomaceous earth, wollastonite, mica, flint powder, kryolite, alumina trihydrate, talc, sand, pyrophyllite, blanc fixe, granulated polyethylene, zinc oxide and mixtures thereof, e.g. a glass/silica/alumina trihydrate mixture. The compositions may also include other components such as colouring agents, stabilizers, foam breakers, dispersants, wetting agents, emulsifiers and fungicides; examples of colouring agents are titanium dioxide, cadmium red, carbon black and aluminium powder. In examples the polymers used are (a) a cross-linkable acrylic polymer containing methylolacrylamide and acid groups, (b) a cross-linkable acrylic polymer containing acid groups, (c) a vinyl acetate/acrylic copolymer containing methylol groups, (d) a vinyl acetate copolymer, (e) a vinyl/ acrylic terpolymer, (f) a hydroxymethyl derivative of a diacetone acrylamide copolymer, (g) a vinyl chloride/acrylic copolymer, (h) a vinyl acetate/dioctyl fumarate/methylol acrylamide terpolymer, (i) an epoxy resin derived from epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A, (j) polyisoprene, (k) polymethyl methacrylate, (1) a polyurethane resin, (m) an ethylene/propylene block copolymer, (n) a polysiloxane resin, (o) an alkyd resin, (p) polyvinylidene chloride, (q) polyacrylonitrile, (r) a urea-formaldehyde resin, (s) an ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer and (t) a styrene-butadiene copolymer.
