Abstract

1,137,465. Polyester-polyurethane foams. FIRMA NOEL MARQUET & CIE S.A. 20 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 33524/67. Headings C3C, C3P and C3R. Foams are prepared by making a mixture of a polyhydroxy compound, excess polyisocyanates, water and catalyst, and when it has started to react, working it into a second mixture of an unsaturated polyester, a copolymerizable monomer, catalyst and optionally an accelerator. Mixtures of any of the above components may be used. A finely divided filler is preferably incorporated in the second mixture. The polyhydroxy compound may be any conventional substance, e.g. a triol, a polyether or polyester. Any unsaturated polyester soluble in vinyl monomers may be used, particularly those having acid numbers of 15 to 34, hydroxy numbers of 25 to 60 and molecular weights of 2000 to 5000. Catalysts in the first mixture comprise, for example, tertiary amines, and in the second mixture peroxide compounds. Specified accelerators are cobalt salts, optionally with amines. An additional foaming agent, e.g. a low-boiling solvent, may be added to the premix. Specified fillers are titanium dioxide, glass-fibres (which may be siliconecoated), dry earths, sand, cellulose derivatives, tannery wastes, organic fibre scrap, asbestos cement, powdered glass, silicates, aluminates, aluminium, wood, water-glass, and particularly materials which set with water, e.g. plaster of Paris, cements, calcium sulphate, iron oxide and lime. The particle size of these fillers is discussed.
