Abstract
1354531 Aqueous polymer compositions; ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer salts GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 April 1971 [12 March 1970] 21240/71 Headings C3R and C3P [Also in Division C7B An aqueous electrocoating polymer composition is made by a process comprising the steps of (a) reacting a polymer having recurrent carboxyl groups and being selected from (1) polyimide prepolymers, (2) polyesters, (3) polyesterimides, and (4) ethylene-maleic anhydride polymers with a nitrogen-containing base to form a water-soluble carboxylate salt of the polymer; (b) either before, during or after the treatment with said base adding sufficient water to the system to dissolve said salt formed in step (a); and (c) adding an acid to the aqueous mixture obtained as a result of steps (a) and (b) to adjust the pH thereof so as to precipitate part of the polymer, whereby a dispersion phase (i.e. containing suspended polymer particles) and a solution phase of the polymer are formed. The acid of step (c) must have the effect of controlling the ratio of fixed (COOH + COO<SP>-</SP>) of the polymer to nitrogen-containing base but must not create cleavage of the polymer. Suitable acids are acetic, formic, butyric, propionic and benzoic acids. By adjusting the pH, the ratio of solution phase to dispersion phase is adjusted and this controls how thick a film can be electrodeposited on a metal substrate anode. The pH may be adjusted to 3À0 to 6À5. Electrodeposition may be on to a Cu wire, e.g. using a degreased, acid-cleaned, water-rinsed Cu wire anode immersed in the electrocoating composition together with carbon cathodes, the composition being stirred by a magnetic stirring bar. Deposited resins may be thermally cured. The above-specified polymers 1 to 4 are of the same kinds as, and are made similarly to, those disclosed in Specification 1,354,532 (see the abridgment of that Specification). Polyimide prepolymers are referred to therein as polyamic acids.
