Abstract
1459016 Olefinic amides NALCO CHEMICAL CO 8 Oct 1974 [12 Oct 1973 24 May 1974 (2) 28 June 1974 (4) 8 Aug 1974 (2)] 43579/74 Heading C2C Olefinic amides, e.g. acrylamide, are prepared by hydrolysing an olefinic nitrile, e.g. acrylonitrile under aqueous liquid phase conditions in the presence of a Raney copper catalyst. The Raney copper catalyst is prepared by contacting at a temperature below 80‹ C. particles of a metal alloy comprised of copper and aluminium with an aqueous solution which has dissolved therein on a 100 weight percent total by - product free solution basis from greater than 0 to 25 weight per cent base and from greater than 0 to 25 weight per cent, or the solubility limit thereof in water, whichever is lower, of at least one additive compound selected from aliphatic hydroxylated hydrocarbon compounds, polyfunctional oxygen - containing aromatic compounds containing at least six carbon atoms, at least two oxygen atoms at least one of which is substituted on an aromatic nucleus, such compounds being soluble in water at a pH greater than 10 to an extent such that a 5 weight per cent solution thereof can be formed at room temperature, and having a molecular weight of not more than 1000, and amino carboxylic acid compounds containing at least 3 carbon atoms, at least one nitrogen atom and at least one carboxyl group and with a molecular weight of not more than 1000.
