Abstract

1353928 Tube expanding SOC ANON FRANCAISE DU FERODO 11 June 1971 [11 June 1970] 27609/71 Heading B3J [Also in Division F2] A joint between a plate having a collar 17 and a pipe 11 is formed by inserting the pipe through the collar and through a gasket having a lip 23 extending axially from a lip extending radially, and expanding the pipe end by inserting a die 25, shaped as shown so that it grips the collar and gasket. The pipe 11 may extend through the two walls (161, 162), Fig. 1 (not shown), of a heat exchanger to which it is secured by the simultaneous application of expansion dies 25, and at its two ends, be made of copper, and be provided with heat transfer fins (12). In a modification, an additional axially-directed lip (21), Fig. 5 (not shown), on the gasket is located between the pipe 11 and collar 17 before expansion of the pipe end. In a further modification for receiving a number of pipes, a unitary gasket 42, Fig. 8, is provided with a number of lips 23 extending axially oppositely directed axial lips (21), Fig. 9 (not shown), may also be provided. The peripheral edge of the unitary gasket 42 is formed with a groove (51), Fig. 11 (not shown), to receive the ribbed rim (56), Fig. 12 (not shown), of a water box clamped on the wall by a locking tab, 8c (61). The peripheral edge of a gasket for a single pipe may similarly be provided with a groove for a water box rim.
