Abstract

1353616 Bridge DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 4 Aug 1971 39047/70 Heading E1G A bridge cross-beam 2 supporting a bridge span 1 is pivoted to the bridge piers 6 in a plane transverse to that of the bridge and maintained at a given angle in said plane relative to the piers by hydraulic actuators 11a, 11b connected therebetween so as to extend obliquely across said angle. The actuators have a release valve which, if a set load on the actuator is exceeded (e.g. owing to differential settlement of the piers), opens to thereby change the actuators length and so alter said angle. The actuators may be pivoted directly to the piers or to tubular hips 5 having guide pads 8 of P.T.F.E. The cross-beam 2 may be part of the bridge span. The piers may be lowered through the hips 5 after projecting the bridge span across the obstacle to be bridged.
