Abstract
1352775 Ceramic-metal seals COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION and FLINDERS UNIVERSITY 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970] 22140/71 Heading B3V [Also in Division C1] A ceramic-metal seal is formed by chemical reaction between a refractory oxide ceramic and a metal of the Transition Series at a temperature below the melting point of either component, the bond between the surfaces being characterized by a sharply defined metal-ceramic interface and very small depth of diffusion of the metal into the ceramic. The heating is carried out in air or inert gas, e.g. argon at normal pressure or under vacuum. The ceramic oxide may be BeO, MgO, CaO, BaO, Al 2 O 3 , Yb 2 O 3 , a rare earth or actinide oxides, SiO 2 , ZrO 2 , TiO 2 , the oxides of iron, cobalt, nickel and ruthenium or mixtures thereof. Other ceramics mentioned are spinels, piezo-electric and magneto ceramics, gem materials, silicon dioxide, pure or with varying amounts of other oxides, e.g. quartz, fused silica, glasses and metal oxides, e.g. zirconium dioxide. The metal may be Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt, Cu, Ag or Au.
