Abstract
1,249,417. Sealing ceramic to ceramic and to metal. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 22 April, 1970 [22 April, 1969], No. 20466/69. Heading B3V. [Also in Division C7] A ceramic-to-ceramic, or to metal, seal between substantially thermally-matched materials, e.g. in electron valves or sodium vapour discharge lamps, comprises a layer of an active alloy sealing material containing a finely-divided dispersion of zirconium oxide not greater than 60% by volume in any part of the layer. The ceramic may be alumina, magnesium oxide or magnesium spinel, and the metal Nb, Ti, Ta, W, Mo or Rh or an alloy of two or more of these. Alternatively, one of the ceramic materials in a ceramic-to-ceramic seal may be a boride, carbide, nitride or silicide of a refractory metal. The sealing layer may be introduced between the surfaces to be sealed as an alloy, or in the form of shims of the separate metals including Zr, zirconium oxide being formed by reaction between the Zr and the refractory oxide of the ceramic. If Zr is not used as an active metal in the sealing layer, a zirconium oxide dispersion is incorporated in the layer before it is inserted and another active metal is used. Added to this initial composition for the sealing layer may be Ni, Fe, Cu, Co, Mn or Cr, in the percentages listed, to bring the m.p. into the range 950- 1350‹ C.
