Abstract

1351477 Ceramic-metal seals GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 12 May 1972 [11 June 1971] 27568/71 Heading B3V [Also in Division C7] A method of hermetically bonding a first component of refractory material, composed of one or more oxides and in either ceramic or crystalline form to a second component, composed either of a sand refractory oxide or a metal or alloy, for the manufacture of a composite article comprises interposing between adjacent surfaces of the components a sealing layer constituting at least one active metal capable of wetting the surface or surfaces of one or both of the components, together with W, Ni and Cu in relative proportions such as to form an alloy having thermal expansion characteristics substantially matching those of the material of the first component, and pressing the assembly of the components and sealing layer together while simultaneously heating the assembly in an inert atmosphere or vacuum to produce a liquid phase in the sealing layer, and to cause the sealing layer to bond together the adjacent surfaces of the components, the initial sealing layer being such that the final sealing layer produced by the heating step will have a microstructure imparting isotropic thermal expansion characteristics to the layer as a whole. In the embodiment described a Nb component is bonded to a ceramic material having an alumina content of at least 85% by wt. using an alloy having a content of 80-85% W. 12-15% Ni and 3-5% Cu by weight and Ti and/or Zr as the active metal or metals, the latter being in a proportion of 1-15% by weight of the total amount of W, Ni and Cu. In a preferred embodiment a tube constituting a lamp envelope is formed of sintered polycrystalline alumina containing 1% by wt. of MgO and is bonded to Nb end caps using an alloy shim having a content of 82% W, 13À5% Ni and 4À5% Cu by weight, a Zr shim and a Ti shim. The W, Ni and Cu alloy shims are placed next to the Nb end caps and the Zr shims are placed next to the alumina, the Ti shims being sandwiched between the Zr and alloy shims. The assembly is bonded together by heating from 1200-1250‹ C. at a pressure of about 10<SP>-5</SP> torr. The shims may be replaced by a mixture of the required metals in powder form and the alumina may be replaced by corundum.
