Abstract

Coupling.-Relates to connecting devices of the kind comprising two members, of which one is attached to one of the two wires or ropes to be connected, and the other or hook member is hinged to the other end of the first member, the arrangement being such that, in the connecting operation, the ropes become tightened. The first member A comprises two connected side cheeks a, a', and the second member B is hinged to fold between the cheeks. Projecting portions a<5> of the cheeks, in conjunction with the hook b, enclose the loop of the rope when the device is in the closed portion. In that position, the centre of the hinge C and the short bill b of the hook are respectively on opposite sides of the line of strain. The strain thus tends to release the device. In the released position shown in Fig. 2, the gap of the hook is presented in the direction of the line of strain, and no objectionable projection is presented to the loop of the rope to hamper the release, the loop of the rope slipping off the short bill of the hook. The hook member B may be held down in the closed position by a pin d. In a modification, the hook member is formed with side cheeks, and the other member is formed solid and lies between the cheeks in the closed position. The invention is applicable also for connecting chains, and may be used for securing awnings in position and for towing purposes.
