Abstract

3048. Millward, B., [trading as Priest, R.]. Feb. 25. Chain couplings. - A device for connecting a chain to another chain or to a hook, ring, &c., or for shortening a chain by connecting together any two links thereof, comprises a block A having a cruciform slot 8, 9 adapted to accommodate two adjacent links 10, 11 when the link 10 is turned crossways to the line of tensile strain on the chain. A screw 14 prevents the link 10 from being withdrawn. The other end of the block A may be provided with a swivelling hook 1, Fig. 1, or with a loose ring, or with an integral hook or ring, or with another cruciform slot, as shown in Fig. 6, for connexion to another chain 10*, 11* or to the other end of the same chain. For shortening chains, the cruciform slots extend right through the block A, as shown in Fig. 8, so that the chain can be passed through one slot and back through the other, leaving a depending loop. When hooks &c. at the ends of the chain prevent it from being passed through the block, the centre portion 24, Fig. 12, of the block is made detachable and is inserted after a loop of the chain has been passed through the block. A pin 23, Figs: 8 and 12, prevents the chain from being pulled from the block.
