Description
0. J. BOETT CHER. HOISTING TACKLE. APPLICATION FILED 050.9, 1921.
Patented July 11, 1922.
OTTO JOHN BOET'ICHER, OF CHILTON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR 0]? TWO-FIFTHS TO FRED W. MAAS AND ONE-FIFTH TO GEO. C. HUME, BOTH 01" CHILTON, WISCONSIN.
HOISTING TACKLE.
Application filed December 9, 1921.
T0 alZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO J. BoETroHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chilton, in the county of Calumet and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Tackle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hoisting tackle in which pulley blocks are used to obtain the necessary power; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed which enable fiat straps or bands to be used in place of the ropes or chains ordinarily used.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a hoisting tackle constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the devices turned around one-quarter from the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the automatic catch. Fig. 4 is a front view of the same.
The upper block 6 has two parallel side plates 7, and a suspension hook 8. A fiat leather strap 9 is used in place of the usual rope or chain, and fiat bands of other flexible material may also be used. One end of the strap 9 is secured to a crossbar 10, on the upper block, and a roller 12 is journaled on a pin 14 in the upper block for the strap to pass over.
The lower block 15 has side plates 16, and a roller 17 is journaled on a pin 18 between the side plates, for the strap to pass under. The block 15 has a lifting hook 19 pivoted on a pin 20 at its lower part, and this hook is preferably a snap hook.
A catch roller 21 of larger diameter than the roller 17, so that the stretches of the strap will not run against each other, is journaled on a pin 22, and is arranged between the roller 17 and the lifting hook, and an automatic catch 24 is pivoted on the pin 20. This catch 24 is a cam provided with a serrated outer surface, and it is pivoted to the pin by a double-eye 25 which straddles the eye of the lifting hook.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
Serial No. 521,180.
The strap 9 passes downwardly from the cross bar 10 under the roller 17, thence up and over the roller 12, and downwardly be tween the catch roller 21 and the catch 24.
When the fall 26 is held in the position shown, parallel to the pull of the load, and is slackened, the cam-shaped catch is turned on its pivot pin by contact with the strap, so that the strap is gripped between the catch and the catch roller.
This tackle is specially adapted for use by linemen in making repairs on telephone and other electric lines, and is used to pull up the wires. The automatic catch enables the lineman to hold the wire under any desired tension in making repairs.
The strap is released by first pulling the fall 26 a little downwardly, when the tackle is in the position shown in Fig. 1, so as to turn the catch on its pivot; and then bending the fall upwardly around the periphery of the roller 21, without letting the strap slide backwardly, until the fall is clear of the catch.
VYhat I claim is:
A tackle, comprising a block having a flat-faced roller journaled in it, a second block having two flat-faced rollers arranged tandem and journaled in it, a cam-shaped sustaining catch provided with a double-eye which is pivoted in the second block in line with its two rollers, a lifting member pivoted between the two eyes of the said double-eye, said catch and lifting member being mounted on the same pivot and being independently movable, and a flat operating strap which engages with the said catch and passes over the said. rollers and is secured at one end to the first said block, said catch operating to clamp the strap against one of the rollers of the said second block.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
OTTO JOHN BOETTOHER.
