Abstract

1352669 Non-woven fabric; fibre preparation machines SCOTT PAPER CO 5 Oct 1972 [3 Nov 1971] 46021/72 Headings D1N and D1R The transverse strength of a non-woven fabric comprising at least two superposed staple fibre laps 14, 16 in which the majority of the fibres are aligned in the longitudinal direction is increased by reducing the degree of fibre orientation followed by the application of binder, the reorientation being accomplished whilst the laps are separated by an entrapped layer of air. The laps 14, 16 produced by carders 12 are conveyed to the reorientating station 42 along a lap conveying channel 24 comprising the top run of an air impervious conveyor belt 26, U-shaped side members 30, back member 34 and upper closures 36. The rotation of card rolls 20 drives air streams 47 into the channel 24 to form an air barrier between belt 26 and lap 14, and between lap 14 and lap 16. A belt speed of above 200 ft/minute, preferably 450 ft/minute, brings the laps 14, 16 to the reorientating station 42, comprising a series of bowed rolls 52, 54, with the air layer between the laps still intact. The upper rolls 52, which reorientate the upper lap 16 are spaced in the machine direction from the lower rolls 54, which reorientate the lower lap 14. Preferably more rolls are provided in one set than in the other. The reorientated laps 14, 16 are then pressed together by calender rolls 60, 62 and the unitary web 68 bonded. Preferably web 68 is bonded in discrete areas totaling less than 25% or even less than 10% of the surface of the web. If the binder is applied by print roller 72 it is preferred that the calender rolls 60, 62 apply a dilute (less than 1%) aqueous solution of a wetting agent. Alternatively the binder may be sprayed on. The laps may comprise staple fibres of rayon, polyolefin, polyamide or polyester, whose length exceeds ¢ inch. The binder may be an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate or an acrylate.
