Abstract
1352639 Moulds HAMILTON DIE CAST Inc 19 April 1971 [11 May 1970] 24871/71 Heading B3F A die assembly for pressure die-casting comprises impression blocks 16, 15a, 16, 16a defining together a casting cavity 12 held in holder blocks 11, 13 by wedging, or wedges 43, 43a which can be adjusted to take up gaps or relieve excessive interference due to the different thermal expansion coefficients of the holder and impression blocks. Within the steel holder blocks 11, 13 are held two casting-impression-defining blocks 15, 15a and below these two gate-defining impression blocks 16, 16a, all made of refractory metal. The blocks 15, 15a are precisely centred in the holders 11, 13 by refractory metal keys 27, 27a bolted to the holders 11, 13 and fitting within keyways 29, 29a on the blocks 15, 15a. The wedges 43, 43a extend along the top of the blocks 15, 15a and down both sides (not shown) of the blocks 15, 15a, 16, 16a and are tightened by bolts 50, 50a when gaps between the holders 11, 13 and blocks 15, 15a, 16, 16a appear as the die heats up during a casting run. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the gap compensation is automatic and obtained by the use of bolts 108 with spring washers 109 arranged so as to force cam-surfaces 79 on an impression block 71 against cam-surfaces 106 on a holder 72. In Fig. 4, an impression block 62 for use with the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, is reversible and has separate different casting cavities 61, 63 on two opposing faces.
