Abstract

1351664 Cleaning engines internally, treating charge I RIVENAES 9 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970 4 Dec 1970 10 Aug 1971] 52060/71 Headings C5G and G10B [Also in Division F4] Cleaning fluid, e.g. 95% water, 4.5% detergent and 0.5% tar acid, is intermittently supplied under pressure through a nozzle into the air supply system of an engine for a period ranging from a few seconds to two hours, e.g. one hour, at intervals from one day to two weeks, e.g. one week, with the relative humidity of the air and cleaning fluid between 60 and 75%, measured at 30‹C. The humidity is measured by a hygrometer in the air supply system and fluid-flow to the nozzle is controlled by a metering valve operated manually or automatically by an electrical control system. The cleaning fluid may be supplied from a tank 26 pressurized with compressed air. A six cylinder diesel engine 10 has the nozzle 29 in the intake duct 17 upstream of the hygrometer 30 and downstream of an exhaust-gas driven supercharger 18. The nozzle may be located upstream of the supercharger air filter 19. Cleaning fluid nozzles may be provided in a scavenging air duct and the individual exhaust passages and individual metering valves may be provided for each nozzle.
