Abstract

1350319 Alkylated hydroxyphenyl maleimide derivatives CIBA-GEIGY AG 6 April 1972 [12 April 1971] 15994/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Novel compounds having the Formula I(a) wherein each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, which may be the same or different, is C 1-4 alkyl; m is 1 or 2; and A is C 1-18 alkyl, C 1-18 alkyl -S-CH 2 CH 2 -, or benzyl (m = 1); or A is (m=2) are prepared (I(a)) by reacting an alkylated hydroxyphenylamine in a non- aqueous, inert, aprotic solvent with maleic anhydride at room temperature, heating the resultant maleamic acid at 100‹ C. in to form the maleimide and then reacting the latter with a mercaptan or dimercaptan in an inert solvent at room temperature using trimethylbenzylammonium methoxide as catalyst. The compounds of Formula I(b) are prepared by reacting an aminophenol with 3,6-dithiadelta - 1 - cyclohexene - 1,2 - dicarboxylic acid anhydride. The compounds of the Formulµ I(a) and I(b) are used as stabilizers for organic materials normally subject to oxidative and thermal deterioration, e.g. cyclohexene, poly-α-olefins, polyamides, synthetic rubber, oils, fats, waxes, resins and soaps. The examples describe the preparation of many thiosuccinimides of Formula I(a) and of N - (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl)-3<SP>1</SP>,6<SP>1</SP>- dithiacyclohex - 1<SP>1</SP> - ene - 1<SP>11</SP>,2<SP>11</SP> - dicarboximide of Formula I(b).
