Abstract

1350056 Welding by fusion GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE STERKRADE AG 25 Oct 1972 49155/70 Heading B3R In horizontal seam, edge-to-edge, double-V, butt joint, submerged arc welding together of vertically disposed, upper and lower, metal plates 1, 2 using a consumable electrode fed through a contact tube 3, the weld preparation comprises negative chamfers on the edge of the lower plate 2 to facilitate flux distribution and retention, and flux powder is fed through a bifurcated pipe 4 having branches 7, 7a through which flux is discharged upstream and downstream of the molten pool, the flux discharged downstream replacing that displaced by the contact tube. In the weld preparation shown in Fig. 1, α = 45 degrees, # = 12-25 degrees, a= 12 mm. and b = 22 mm. The pipe 4 is displaceably secured, by a holder 9, to an insulated electrode wire feeding head 3. Current is fed at 10. CO 2 , fed through a tube 8, may be used to feed the flux powder. Orifices 6, 6a, respectively, of the branches 7, 7a are elliptical, the major ellipse axes being disposed longitudinally of the seam and the minor ellipse axes corresponding to the contact tube diameter. The powder feed pipe 4 is of non-magnetic metal to avoid magnetic influence on the flux powder distribution.
