Abstract

1348499 Perforating plastics material LERNER MACHINE CO Ltd 18 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971 2 Feb 1972] 58690/71 and 4902/72 Heading B4B Apparatus for forming an aperture in the material of a shrink wrapped pack 30, comprises suction means for withdrawing a portion of the wrapping material from the pack and a cutting tool to form the aperture when the portion is withdrawn. A tubular cutting tool 1 is fixed in a bore 13 formed in movable head 3, 12, the tool being provided with a cutting edge 14. A cylindrical member 2 is slidably mounted in the head and is formed with a passageway 7 leading to bores 11 formed in a plug 10; the passageway may be connected to a vacuum source or a compressed air source. A movable plate 16 is mounted above the cutting tool and is provided with an aperture 15. In operation, a pack is moved under the cutting tool as shown in Fig. 1 and the head moved downwardly until the cutting edge 14 is just clear of the pack. The plate 16 is then moved so as to align the aperture with the bore of the cutting tool and the member 2 then moved through the cutting tool until the plug 10 contacts the material of the pack. Suction is now applied to the passageway 7 to cause the material to be held in contact with the plug and the member 2 then raised so as to cause the material to be cut by the tool 1; the tool is heated in order to facilitate cutting. After cutting the member 2 is raised and compressed air fed to the passageway 7 so as to allow the cut-out piece 19, Fig. 4, to be released in a chamber 17. In a modification a cold cutting tool can be used which is rotated and/or provided with pointed projections to facilitate cutting.
