Abstract

1,107,753. Forming sheet material. PARNALL & SONS Ltd. 27 Oct., 1965 [1 Aug., 1964], No. 31642/64. Heading B5A. Hollow articles are formed from plastic sheet material by clamping the sheet, severing an area of the sheet, and then drawing that area of the sheet, all at a single station. In the embodiment shown in the Figure, a mould 5 is supported upon a lower press plate by a resilient O-ring 12, and is located within a knife 13 fixed to the platen. In operation a sheet 10 is indexed over the mould and then clamped thereagainst by a heating plate 8 carried by an upper press platen 9. Further movement of the platen 9 is then effected so that the mould is resiliently depressed relative to the knife and the sheet is completely severed. The severed section, which is securely clamped between the heating plate and rim 6 on the mould, is then vacuum formed by means of a vacuum applied through ports 15, 16, and 17. The sheet may, alternatively, be blow formed.
