Abstract
1348480 Electrolytic drilling DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 15 July 1971 [16 July 1970] 34585/70 Heading C7B A tool for electrolytically drilling holes e.g. 0.10 to 0.50 mm in a workpiece 16 comprises a self-supporting tube 21 of insulating material, e.g. glass, quartz or sapphire, along the uniform bore of which extends a conducting wire 20, e.g. of Pt containing 10% Rh, fixed axially relatively to the tube by a support e. g. clamp 28 so that a free end of the wire is within the tube and spaced axially (by distance 22) not less than 2 and preferably less than 20 times the tube's internal diameter, from the free open end of the tube, electrolyte e.g. 20% HNO 3 from tube 15 being supplied to the clearance between the wire connected as cathode and the bore. The tube's internal diameter and wire's diameter are preferably 2/3 and 1/5 respectively of the tube's external diameter e.g. 0.09 to 0.43 mm. A plurality of holes may be simultaneously drilled using a multiple tool Fig. 3 comprising a plurality of tubes each having a wire. The free end of the wire may be initially level with the tube's open end and electro-eroded by supplying current and electrolyte e. g. KCN to produce the required distance.
