Abstract

1348252 Lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Oct 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 48202/70 Heading F4R A tubular metal or metal halide discharge lamp 11 is mounted inside a trough-shaped reflector 10 which projects a light beam along an axis perpendicular to the axis of the lamp, the axis of the reflector being parallel to, and preferably coincident with, the axis of the lamp and the reflector having, on one side of a plane containing the axes of the beam and the lamp, a portion 16 which collects and focuses back on to the lamp heat and light emitted by the lamp. This portion in use is disposed directly beneath the lamp so that the lamp envelope is maintained at a substantially uniform temperature throughout its circumference and cool portions on the lowermost part of the lamp are avoided. The reflector portion 16 is preferably cylindrical and the portions 12 and 13 parabolic, although these latter portions may alternatively be elliptical or hyperbolic. The lamp is freely exposed to the ambient atmosphere during use.
