1347805 Rotary compressors L RICHTER 14 April 1972 17383/72 Heading F1F An air compressor comprises a compressedair container 34 housing a hollow member secured by bolts 21 and defining a chamber 1 wherein an impeller 8 is fixed to an externallydriven shaft 7, which carries a flywheel 17 and is coupled to a turbine rotor 20 adjacent a compressed-air outlet-opening 36. Atmospheric air is drawn through openings 3, 3<SP>1</SP> controlled by spring-loaded valves 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and is directed by the impeller into an opening 11 in a wall 9. The opening 11 communicates with an opening 31 formed in a cover 13 in register with a ring of gear-teeth 10 meshing with a gear 16, which is mounted on a radial pin 27 in a notch 41 at a leading portion 39 of said cover. Due to suction created by the gear air is drawn into the geartooth spaces 38 from the opening 31 and is thus transferred (as indicated by arrows 42, 44) to the outer side of a trailing portion 40 of the cover and so to the interior of the container 34. The compressed air flowing to the opening 36 drives the rotor 20. Air discharged from the appliance to which the compressed air is supplied returns to the chamber 1 through openings 4, 4<SP>1</SP>. The openings 3, 3<SP>1</SP> can be closed by turning plates 23 mounted on the stems of the valves 2, 2<SP>1</SP>.
