Abstract

1440564 Shafts CAV Ltd 7 Sept 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 43464/72 Heading F2U [Also in Division F1] The invention relates to a turbo-supercharger of the type comprising a turbine rotor 10 and a compressor rotor 20 mounted at opposite ends of a shaft 23 which is supported for rotation within a housing 16. In use the turbine is driven by exhaust gases from an I.C. engine, the compressor supplying air under pressure to the engine. In accordance with the invention the shaft 23 is formed as a body defining two opposed frusto-conical surfaces and the housing defines a cavity of complementary shape, the surfaces of the cavity and the shaft defining a fluid bearing for the shaft. In the embodiment, the shaft tapers inwardly towards the axis of rotation from intermediate its ends. The shaft is mounted at its ends on cylindrical bosses forming parts of the two rotors, the assembly being held together by means of a tie bolt 24.
