Abstract
1347580 Crane operating radius indicator B & A ENGINEERING CO Ltd 30 June 1972 [2 July 1971] 31241/71 Heading B8B A crane operating radius indicator is shown mounted on a support formed by a base-plate 4 on an extensible crane jib 20. A follower 8 having a pendulum 10 attached slides in a slot 9 parallel to the jib axis. The follower 8 also moves in a slot 13 in a lever 2 attached to a sprocket 7 rotatably mounted on a shaft 3 connected to the base-plate 4. A spring-loaded cable drum 1 has a cable 14 passing to the jib head and drives the sprocket 7 via a sprocket 5 on the drum 1 and a chain 6. A second pendulum 15 is pivoted on a pin 12 and carries a scale 11 maintained horizontal irrespective of the jib angle. The lever 2 positions the follower 8 in response to changes in the jib length so that the distance between the pivot 12 and the follower 8 is proportional to the jib length. Thus the pendulum 10 provides a vertical line giving a reading on the scale 11 directly proportional to the operating radius. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the position of the follower 8 is determined by a screw-threaded rod (21) rotated in response to changes in the jib length. The scale 11 may be arranged at a constant angle (instead of being horizontal) and may have attached to it a jib inclination scale co-operating with a pointer (17) attached to the jib 20.
