Abstract
1334280 Pendulum inclinometer J MEIER 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970] 26396/71 Headings G1A A pendulum inclinometer for measuring small inclination angles comprises a pendulum 3 having a grid 10 attached to one end adjacent to a similar grid 11 fixed to a case 2, containing a light source 12 and two detectors 14 and 15 fixed in the case 2, as shown, the relative proportion of light reaching the detectors 14 and 15 being dependent on the inclination of the pendulum relative to the casing. The grids 10 and 11 may be in the form of segments of a circular ring, the radii of which correspond to the distances to the pivot axis of the pendulum and the markings for lines on the grids may extend radially with respect to the pivot axis of the pendulum 50. As shown in Fig.2, the lines of each grid 10 and 11 are of the same width except for line 17 and are spaced apart by the same amount, so that when one grid moves laterally with respect to the other, different proportions of light pass through on each side of the centre line 17 giving rise to a difference between the outputs of the detectors 14 or 15. The motion of the pendulum is damped by means of a metal member 7 and a magnet 6 the deflection of the pendulum 3 is limited by means of a bolt member 8 extending into a recess 9 located at the lower end of the pendulum. An electronic measuring circuit including a meter utilizes the signals from the detectors 14 and 15. A range changing facility is also disclosed.
