Abstract

1347490 Forming yarns; roller arrangements in twisting machines PLATT INTERNATIONAL Ltd 9 Nov 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 39972/70 Headings DID D1F and D1W In the manufacture of self-twisted yarn comprising two or more self-twist strands of staple fibres, prior to or during insertion of twist there are included long binder fibres which span the twist change-over zones and extend into the bordering zones of opposite twist, thereby ensuring the tensile strength of the yarn. As shown in Fig. 1, at least one roving 2 prepared from a blend of normal staple cotton fibre and a minor proportion of long staple cotton binder fibres is fed through a drafting arrangement 4 comprising doubleapron 6 feeding the fibre to a "two-over-one" draft roller arrangement providing successive nips between rollers 12, 14 and 10 (between which the draft is zero). Blended attenuated fibres then pass through the nip between relatively transversely reciprocating, false-twist imparting rollers 16 whereby the self-twist yarn is formed. As shown in Fig. 2, rovings 18 and 20 of binder and short staple fibres pass through separate apron drafting arrangements 22 and 24. The attenuated rovings are fed directly to false-twist imparting rollers 16 the resultant strands from which are converged by passage through a guide eye 26 so positioned as to ensure a partially phased combination thereof. When the combined strands relax the plies untwist and mingle to form a selftwist yarn 28. In another embodiment, long staple synthetic fibres are blended with staple cotton fibres at the blowing or carding stage and rovings produced from the blend are fed to a twist tube which operates intermittently to impart alternate zones of false-twist therein. Calender rollers draw the rovings through the tube whereafter they are allowed to self-twist together to form a yarn.
