1347402 Metallurgical converters VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE AG 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970] 22157/71 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] Spray steel-making apparatus includes an inlet funnel 1 from which a falling metal stream 2 is atomized by a horizontal gas jet 8, to form a cone 9. Metal 10 and slag 11 are collected on hearth 12, the slag flowing countercurrent to the metal to a slag tap 16 remote from the impact zone A of the spray, while metal is tapped at 15, a further tap-hole 14 being provided to empty the vessel on shut-down. Metal may be caused to flow up an inclined hearth to the tap-hole while slag flows downwardly over it.
