Abstract

1347398 Boilers BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 19 April 1971 [28 March 1970] 25608/71 Heading F4A A boiler for producing steam or hot water comprises a furnace chamber 1 with a horizontal firing direction and a substantially rectangular vertical cross-section and with side walls 2, 3 including tubes in tube banks 7, 7a extending between upper and lower tube headers 9, 8 located at or near the ends of a diagonal of the cross-section and with a gas passage 6 disposed at a side of the chamber and arranged for traversal by furnace gases in the direction of the arrow 19, the gas passage extending adjacent to the furnace chamber. As shown, each side wall 2, 3 is substantially in two planes inclined at 45 degrees to the horizontal and the tubes in the gas passage are disposed at a similar angle. In operation as a steam boiler, header 9 forms a steam and water drum. Furnace gases from burner(s) 18 are fed through the chamber and into passage 16, which may be baffled and which contains the tube banks 7, 7a, and back along further gas passage 12, bounded by outer sheeting wall 14 attached by bellows section 15 to tube wall 11, containing further heat exchange surfaces 13, e.g. economizer tubes and/or air heaters, the gases finally exiting at outlet 20. A maintenance space 16 may be provided between the tube banks and the whole boiler rests on a base 10. In use as a hot water generator, a header similar to header 8 is placed at 9, and if superheated steam is required, suitable tubes are placed in passage 6. Exposed sides of the tube walls 2, 3, 4, 5, 11 and the headers may be covered in refractory material.
