Abstract

1347186 Sizing glass fibres OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 17 Aug 1972 [29 Nov 1971] 38501/72 Heading D1P [Also in Division C3] Linear glass fibres are sized using a composition comprises: (I) 1.5-2.5% by wt. of a water emulsifiable resin comprising at least one film former containing a solubilizing group wherein Y is H or a C 1-7 alkyl radical or is the same'as X where X is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having at least one OH group, OH or -(OR") n OH (R" is a C 1-6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and n=1-25), R is a long chain organic radical having a M.W. up to 10,000; (II) 1.9 to 3.0% by wt. of an emulsifiable lubricant; (III) 0.06-0.40% by wt. of a volatile organic acid which forms an azetrope with water; and/or (IV) a non-volatile C 2-9 polyfunctional organic acid or a blend of such acids. A typical I has the formula: Other examples are derived from the same epoxy resin and contain either the original glycidyl group or two dihydroxyethyl amine groups. II may be a polyethylene glycol fatty acid ester, a silicone emulsion or a polyethylene emulsion. III may be formic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, valeric acid or ethyl hexanoic acid. IV may be citric, oxalic, itaconic, succinic, lactic or azelaic acid. The composition may additionally comprise up to 1.2% by wt. of an organosilane (V), e.g. gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane and/or gamma - aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. The fibres may be sized immediately after formation from molten glass, the sized fibres gathered into a strand and the sized strands collected on a rotating cylinder to form a wound package having multiple layers of the sized glass strand; the product may be dried in a conventional oven.
