Abstract
1346745 Infra-red sources BLOCK ENG Inc 3 July 1972 [6 July 1971] 30987/71 Heading H5N An infra-red source comprises a helically grooved metallic core 10 supporting and in thermal contact with, a conductor 12 formed of a wire having an electrically insulating oxide coating. The wire may be a nickel-chrome alloy and the core may be of chromium alloy steel. The source is assembled by coiling the unoxidized wire on the core unscrewing the core from the coil, recesses 14, and oxidizing the wire surface in a suitable atmosphere by heating the wire electrically to 1000 C. Recesses 14 allow turning members to be inserted in the core to effect the unscrewing. The wire is then rethreaded on to the core, the oxidation process being maintained. The metal core acts as heat ballast.
