1346649 Ironing leather TURNER MACHINERY Ltd 14 June 1971 [15 June 1970] 27702/71 Heading C6C Leather is ironed by being urged against a heated surface by a pressure which is varied cyclically at a frequency of from 5 to 50 c. p. s. As shown, an endless belt 8 passing over rollers 10 and a drive roller 11 conveys a piece of leather 9 between a plate 1 with a tapered lead-in portion 3 and a plate 5 which has a resilient coating 6 of rubber or felt. The plate 1, which has means 4 for heating or cooling it electrically or by steam or water, is adjustably loaded and/or positioned by a hydraulic cylinder 2, and the plate 5 is connected to a vibratory device 7 which may comprise a flexible membrane subjected to a cyclically varying hydraulic pressure. Transport of the leather takes place during those phases of the vibratory motion when the pressure on the leather is not at its maximum, and to facilitate this the roller 11 is driven through a slip clutch, and the plate 1 and coating 6 may be faced with a low friction material. An additional roller 13, which may also be driven, ensures straight-line transport of the leather. A second belt above the leather may be provided, and this belt, preferably of steel for heat transfer from the plate 1, may run at a different speed from the belt 8. In a machine in which the vibratory frequency is 10 c.p. s. and the effective width of the plate 1 is 3cm. the leather transport speed may be 30cm/ sec., but it is preferred to use a wider plate so that successively ironed portions of leather overlap each other. The ironing tools and transport means may be inclined to the horizontal in which case the conveyer belt may be replaced by a stationary foil and the leather transported manually.
