Abstract

1346412 Floating weirs MEGATOR PUMPS & COMPRESSORS Ltd 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970 26 Aug 1970] 10540/70 and 41089/ 70 Heading B1D Apparatus capable of separating an oil layer from water and adapted to straddle an oil slick boom comprises a floating structure including two parallel inverted V-shaped pipes 3 whose front and rear ends open respectively into a chamber 5 and an outlet pipe 2, which latter is connected to suction. The chamber 5 is closed at its top by a perforated plate and has its sides extended upwardly and outwardly at their upper ends to form a weir 7. The structure is positioned so that the weir 7 floats just below the. surface of the oil and so that the outlet pipe 2 is on the uncontaminated side of the boom. Oil flows over the weir 7 and into the chamber 5 and is removed via the pipes 3 and outlet 2. The structure is equipped with adjustable buoyancy tanks 4. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the structure is circular or trapezoidal and the chamber may be made buoyant by incorporated foamed plastics into a lower compartment.
