Abstract

1510670 Scavenging vessel MITSUI OCEAN DEVELOPMENT & ENG CO Ltd 12 Dec 1975 [22 April 1975] 50945/75 Heading B1D [Also in Division B7] A craft for recovering oil from a body of water comprises a inlet with an upper sloping surface 5 extending to the entrance of a well 6 which is disposed upwardly therefrom to an outlet 9, a guide plate 10 disposed beneath the well 6, and a device 11 for sucking the liquid from the well 6 and passing it to a separating tank 16. The craft is formed with port and starboard bulls 2 and 3 which form storage tanks for the separated oil, and a central section 4. Baffles 7 reduce turbulance at the inlet to the well 6. The separating tank 16 comprises an inlet 17, perforate partitions 20 and weirs 21 leading to port and starboard oil chambers 22, 23. The separated water is returned to the well 6 via a pipe 34. Each port and starboard oil chamber 22, 23 is connected respectively to the starboard and port oil tank 28, 29 via pipes 24, 25 to assist in righting the craft upon healing. The flow of pumped liquid to and from the separator 16 is controlled manually with the aid of sight glasses 13, 36, Automatic control can be used with the aid of an ultrasonic detector to measure the thickness of the oil layer in the well 6. Oil is pumped from the craft via an outlet valve 37.
