Abstract
1,274,387. Centrifugal separators; removing floating oil from water. M. FREEGARDE. 19 April, 1971 [2 April, 1970], No. 15556/70. Headings B1D and B2P. A water-borne liquid is separated from a body of water on which it floats by supporting a chamber 1 having an aperture 4 in its wall in the body of water and moving the chamber relative to the body of water whereby a surface layer of the water is caused to enter the chamber through the aperture 4 tangentially to its wall thereby inducing a rotational motion to the water contained in the chamber so that its surface assumes an inclination towards the centre of the chamber towards which the water-borne liquid 7 drains and from whence it is collected. The chamber 1, Fig. 1 may be supported between two hulls of a catamaran and may be used to collect oil slicks from the surface of the sea. Alternatively, two chambers may be supported each between adjacent two of three hulls of a trimaran. The chamber 1, which is open at top and bottom, extends a short distance below the surface of the water. A scoop 3 directs the surface water passing between the hulls of the vessel through the aperture 4 into the chamber. The rotational motion of the water in the chamber may be increased by means of a stirrer 5 driven by a motor 6. The oil in the chamber 1 is trapped between two concentric tubes 8 and 9. The oil accumulates within the tube 9 and as it rises to the level of one or more apertures 10 in the wall of the tube 9, it spills over into an outer annular trough 11 from whence it may be pumped away through a pipe 12. The outer or trimaran may be self-propelled or may be tube 8 may be dispensed with. The catamaran towed by a ship.
