Abstract

1345074 Two and four-stroke engines SOC NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION 30 July 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 36041/71 Heading F1B An auxiliary piston 9 in the head 3 of the main cylinder 1 has a variable stroke so that the compression ratio of the engine may be adjusted. In a four-stroke engine the piston 9 is operated through a rod 17 and a lever 18 from a crankpin 16 on the engine cam-shaft 7 and the pivot 19 of the lever is adjustable in position by an arm 21 on a shaft 22. The piston 9 reaches T.D.C. I at T.D.C. of the main piston 2 or up to 90 degrees of crank angle before and B.D.C. of the piston 9 is adjustable between a position II providing the maximum compression ratio and a position III providing the minimum compression ratio. The piston 9 may define one end wall of a chamber 12 having a fuel injector 13 and opening to the cylinder 1 through an orifice 14. The auxiliary cylinder 8 may open over its full cross-section to the cylinder 1, Fig.2 (not shown). In a twostroke engine the auxiliary piston is reciprocated at the same rate as the main piston and T.D.C. of the auxiliary piston occurs during scavenging, e.g. at B.D.C. of the main piston. The piston 9 may be operated from the cam-shaft 7 through a linkage, Fig.7 (not shown), including a lever (25) having one end pivoted to the piston rod (29) and the other end formed with an elongated aperture (27). A spindle (28) in the lever aperture (27) is adjustable by a device (11) in accordance with the pressure measured by a sensor in the crown of the auxiliary piston to vary the engine compression ratio. The engine may be supercharged and have a plurality of cylinders.
