Abstract

1344491 Crimping composite filaments SNAM PROGETTI SpA 28 May 1971 [10 June 1970] 18118/71 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] A process for crimping yarn comprises drawing a yarn of composite filaments, electrostatically charging the yarn to separate the filaments, contacting the filaments with an air stream to further separate the filaments, thermally shocking the filaments and then allowing the filament temperature to decrease slowly. The filaments may be formed of two or more homopolymers and/or co-polymers. Yarn is drawn between calender 2 and godet 5 over heated pin 3, suitably heated to 60-100‹ C., is passed through a charged ring (not shown) producing a corona discharge to charge the yarn, is passed through ejector 6 and then passed through oven 7 in which the yarn is thermally shocked and then subjected to a slow temperature decrease. The yarn may alternatively be charged by applying a potential to it, or by using a turboelectric effect. The drawn yarn may have an elongation at break of less than 16%, and preferably 8%. The thermal shock temperature may be from 200‹ to 600‹ C., and preferably 250‹ to 360‹ C. The yarn may have 6 to 12, and preferably 10, crimps per centimetre, and may have an extensibility of from 5 to 25%. The filaments may be formed from two polymers or co-polymers present in a ratio by weight of one to one.
