Abstract
1310776 Polycaproamide filaments ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 10 Aug 1971 [10 Aug 1970] 37485/71 Heading B5B A process for producing drawn filaments of polycaproamide comprises extruding molten caproamide to form filaments, solidifying the filaments by quenching them, applying a spin finish to the filaments, feeding the filaments by a heated feed roll to a first draw roll so as to draw the filaments, cooling the filaments between the feed roll and the first draw roll by blowing air under pressure at them, further drawing the filaments between said first draw roll and second draw roll and winding up the filaments. The temperature of the heated feed roll may be from 80 to 120 C., and the filament temperatures immediately before and after the cooling by blowing air under pressure between the feed roll and the first draw roll may be respectively 80 to 95 C. and 50 to 70 C. The first draw roll may have an associated separator roll or may be cooled by blowing ambient air across it. The draw ratio between the feed roll and the first draw roll may be from 1À01 to 2À17, and the total draw ratio may be from 2 to 5, especially from 3À5 to 4À6. In apparatus as shown, yarn 1 leaves a quenching chimney 2 below a spinnerette. Yarn 1 then passes over spin finish applicator roll 3 and on to feed roll 4, optionally equipped with step roll (not shown) and with separator roll 41. Air cooling jet 5, fed by ambient temperature air, cools the yarn as it is drawn between feed roll 4 and first draw roll 6. Separator 7 for draw roll 6 can be in the normal position as shown, or in the lower separator roll position as shown by 7a. The second draw step takes place between the first draw roll 6 and second draw roll 8, having its associated separator roll 81. Yarn 1 then passes to winder 9. Yarn so made shows an improved resistance to ozone-fading, having a #E value of less than 3À3, ultimate tensile strength of 4À0 to 7À5 g.p.d. and ultimate elongation of 25 to 60%. Preferred #E values are from 2À5 to 3À2. The invention is particularly useful for the production of yarn having filaments of Y-shaped crosssection. A typical modification ratio for such filaments is 3À4.
