Abstract

1343875 Welding by pressure FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 28 June 1972 30224/72 Heading B3R In securing two levers to the end of a shaft 10, a spigot 13 is formed on the end of the shaft, the spigot is inserted through an aperture 14 in one of the levers 12, the other lever 11 is brought into contact with the end of the spigot, a welding projection being present on either the lever 12 or the spigot 13, and welding force and current are are applied between the shaft and the other lever to projection weld the other lever to the spigot and at the same time clamp the one lever 12 between the other lever 12 and the end of the shaft. In an embodiment the shaft is a carburetter throttle shaft, the lever 11 is a throttle lever and the lever 12 is a fast idle lever. A projection 15 is embossed on the throttle c ver, but may be formed by a conical or similar shaped end of the spigot. The shaft is clamped between electrodes 16 while supported by an insulating member 18 and with the fast idle lever over the spigot the projection 15 is held against the spigot by an electrode 19. Welding force and current are applied by the electrodes and the rate of collapse of the projection is measured and those rates above a predetermined maximum or less than a predetermined minimum indicate inadequate welds and those welds are rejected.
