Abstract
1343733 Reciprocating compressors GUNWEB Ltd 19 April 1971 [9 March 1970] 24592/71 Heading F1N [Also in Division F2] A compressor comprises a piston in the form of a truncated sphere, the piston being reciprocated and oscillated in a cylinder 23 by a rod 36 having one end rigidly fixed to the piston and the other end journalled on a crank-pin 41. During the suction stroke a crown portion 33 of the piston moves away from a skirt portion to uncover channels 47 and allow fluid to enter the cylinder from a crankcase 44. Fluid compressed in the cylinder is delivered past a ball valve 28 in the cylinder head. The skirt portion is provided with a ring 43 having an outer surface which is part of a sphere of the same diameter as the cylinder. The ring 43 may be of Teflon, Teflon bronze or glass filled Teflon (registered Trade Mark) and split, the ends being of half width and in abutment along a mid plane 58. A spring member may be provided to urge the ring to expand. The cylinder 23 may be of cast steel with a zinc compound coating 60 or cast zinc with a nickel plated or anodized surface 60.
