1343511 Colloidal polymer/monomer mixtures BAYER AG 3 Sept 1971 [5 Sept 1970] 41221/71 Heading C3P A colloidal mixture comprising (a) 10 to 80 parts by weight of a polymer; (b) 90 to 20 parts by weight of a monomer copolymerizable with a maleic acid polyester and/or a fumaric acid polyester; the polymer being dispersed in a continuous phase of monomer, and being substantially insoluble in the monomer at about 20‹ C. but capable of dissolving or swelling therein on warming above that temperature, may be prepared by dissolving or swelling the polymer in the monomer with warming, and cooling the mixture of monomer and polymer. A polymerizable composition may be prepared comprising the colloidal mixture and a copolymerizable mixture of at least one maleic acid and/or fumaric acid polyester and a copolymerizable monomer. In the examples colloidal mixtures are prepared comprising high pressure polyethylene powder, and granules, styrene, ABS resin, α-methylstyrene, a copolymer of styrene and α-methylstyrene, vinyl toluene, a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, trichloroethylene, vinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl butyroacetal, titanium dioxide, unsaturated polyester, toluhydroquinone and silica. These are highly viscous but may be made into crumbly mixtures by suction filtration of some of the monomer. Polymerizable compositions are prepared by mixing these mixtures with a polyester prepared from 1,2- propylene glycol, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride, hydroquinone, styrene, polymethyl methacrylate solution in styrene, tert-butyl perbenzoate, zinc stearate, kaolin, titanium dioxide, black iron oxide, magnesium oxide, glass fibre mat, Ca-Mg carbonate, Mg carbonate and glass fibre and the compositions moulded and cured.
