Abstract

A resin composition comprises an unsaturated polyester resin, a copolymerizable monomer, a mineral filler and a thermoplastic polymeric material and is characterized in that the composition, mainly composed of the filler, is of dough consistency suitable for hot-pressing in a mould wherein it is caused to flow and set in a three dimensional shape; in that the amount of monomer is between 5 and 10% by weight of the total composition but less than the amount of polyester resin; in that the main filler ingredient is a substantially non-absorbent powdered mineral filler; in that the thermoplastic polymer will dissolve or swell in the monomer at least when heated but is not converted to a thermosetting material thereby; and in that the thermoplastic polymer comprises 2 to 14% by weight of the total composition. Examples of the various constituents include the following:-Polyester components ethylene and propylene glycols; pentaerythritol; maleic, fumaric, phthalic, tetrachlorophthalic and adipic acids; Monomers styrene, diallyl phthalate, vinyl toluene, methyl methacrylate and mixtures thereof; Catalyst benzoyl peroxide; Inhibitors hydroquinone, t-butyl catechol; Mineral fillers glass fibres, calcium carbonate, antimony oxide; Thermoplastic polymers polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, cellulose propionate, polyethylene and a styrene-butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer; Optional ingredients mould lubricants such as stearic acid and zinc and magnesium stearates; fire retardants such as chlorinated wax.
