Abstract

1378463 Moulding compositions DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 10 April 1972 [7 Sept 1971] 16438/72 Heading C3P A thermosetting moulding composition comprises 30-70 parts of an unsaturated polyester, 29-69 parts of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one CH 2 =C< group and 1-10 parts of a styrene/diene block copolymer containing 27-1% of styrene and with a total molecular weight of 73,000- 150,000. This moulding composition is compounded with an initiator, filler, mould release, pigment and is either mixed with reinforcing fibres and moulded with heating to form an article or impregnated on to a reinforcing mat and then moulded. In examples the polyesters are formed from propylene glycol, isophthalic acid and maleic anhydride or fumaric acid, or from maleic anhydride, brominated tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and mixed glycols, the unsaturated monomer used is styrene optionally with methyl methacrylate or vinyl acetate and the block copolymer is either a styrene / butadiene / styrene or styrene/ isoprene/styrene copolymer. Other additives exemplified are t-butyl perbenzoate or peroctanoate, zinc stearate, calcium carbonate, pigment, glass fibre or glass fibre mat and antimony trioxide. Comparative examples wherein the block copolymer is omitted or is replaced by polybutadiene, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinylidene fluoride and polystyrene are also described.
