Abstract

1,059,556. Coated surfaces. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 9, 1965 [Sept. 22, 1964], No. 38585/64. Heading B2K. [Also in Divisions B5 and B7]. A body for a motor car is made from one or more parts obtained by conventional moulding or shaping methods from thermoplastic organic polymeric material, the body having on at least part of one surface a covering of a hardened fibre reinforced resin applied to the surface in hardenable form and thereafter allowed to harden. The thermoplastic organic material has a Young's modulus of at least 10<SP>5</SP>1b/sq. in, and is selected from the homopolymers of vinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride containing up to 20% by weight of vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride; polymethyl methacrylate and copolymers of methyl methacrylate and the alkyl esters of acrylic acid containing 1-8 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety, polystyrene, nylon; the polyacetals; the rigid co-polymers or butadiene and styrene and/or methyl methacrylate; mixtures of rigid copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile with rubbery polymers or copolymers of butadiene; high density polyethylene; and polypropylene. The thermoplastic organic material may contain a reinforcing agent such as glass fibre, asbestos fibre, or mica. The hardenable resin which is applied by spraying is preferably a polyester resin prepared by inter-estification of a dibasic or polybasic acid e.g. phthalic, adipic, succinic or sebacic acid, with an alcohol, e.g. allyl or a substituted allyl alcohol. The polyester resin is alternatively prepared by esterifying an unsaturated polyhydric alcohol with an α#-unsaturated acid. Alternatively the resin is an epoxy resin. The resin is reinforced by the inclusion of e.g. glass fibres. In the embodiment shown a motor car body comprises two parts 1, 2, formed from shaped sheets of polymethyl methacrylate, the upper part 1 being basically transparent but coloured over part of its area, and the lower part 2 being opaque or translucent and formed with strengthening ribs.
