Abstract

The present invention in a first aspect (with reference to Figure 2) relates to a body part for a vehicle which is formed from a transparent or translucent material (30) and which is painted on a surface (31a) which in use is an inwardly facing surface of the body part. The present invention in a second aspect relates to a method of forming a body panel (50) comprising the steps of heating a flat sheet of polymeric material with a thickness in the range of 0.5 to 4 mm; drawing the heated sheet into contact with a shaped surface of a one-sided mould tool (51) by creating a partial vacuum between the heated sheet and shaped surface of the mould tool (51), the heated sheet thereby acquiring the shape of the shaped surface; cooling the shaped sheet of polymeric material and releasing the shaped sheet of polymeric material from the one-sided mould tool (51).

Description

(57) The present invention in a first aspect (with reference to Figure 2)
relates to a body part for a vehicle which is formed from a transparent or translucent material (30) and which is painted on a surface (31a) which in use is an inwardly facing surface of the body part. The present invention in a second aspect relates to a method of forming a body panel (50) comprising the steps of heating a flat sheet of polymeric material with a thickness in the range of 0.5 to 4 mm; drawing the heated sheet into contact with a shaped surface of a one-sided mould tool (51) by creating a partial vacuum between the heated sheet and shaped surface of the mould tool (51), the heated sheet thereby acquiring the shape of the shaped surface; cooling the shaped sheet of polymeric material and releasing the shaped sheet of polymeric material from the one-sided mouid tool
