Abstract
1343295 Branch pipe couplings COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970 9 Feb 1971] 4902/73 Divided out of 1343294 Heading F2G An injector for injecting fluid fire extinguishant into a stream of fluid fuel in a conduit, e.g. an oil-well head pipe comprises a valve disc urged on to a seat by a spring, a chamber surrounding the valve stem upstream of the disc into which ducts conduct extinguishant tangentially to the walls, and means for adjusting the spring force. The Fig. 2 injector has threaded body 36 screwed into recess 37 in body 1. Annular passage 39 communicating with chamber 6 and the extinguishant supply is isolated from recess 37 and the fuel flow by seals 38. Valve disc 40 bears on circular edge 41 of body 36 and closes chamber 48, and ducts 47 link passage 39 and chamber 48 upstream of the disc. Stem 40a coupled to disc 40 is fixed to screw 43 extending through housing 44 containing spring 45 and is retained by nut 46. When the injector is idle the oil pressure on disc 40 augments the action of spring 45 in urging the disc on to its seat 41. The valve opens only when extinguishant pressure in chamber 48 exceeds this combined force. The injector provides whirling jets of extinguishant which penetrate the peripheral layers of the fuel stream. In a modification the angle of part 42 to the injector axis is reduced and the sheet of extinguishant is reflected from 42 to form a penetrating jet. The Fig. 3 injector comprising body 51 mounted in member 53 so as to define annular chamber 52 therebetween, has feed chamber 55 surrounding rod 56 of valve disc 57 and connected by ducts 54 with 52. Compression spring 58 retained by stop 59 integral with rod 56 urges valve 57 against its seat. Detachable nozzle 60 is received in a recess in 51, and has inner surface 60a such that the extinguishant is discharged as a comical eddy jet. Fig. 5 illustrates an alternative nozzle which creates a cylindrical or converging jet.
