Abstract
1343296 Branch pipe couplings; valves COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970] 4903/73 Divided out of 1343294 Headings F2G and F2V An injector for injecting fluid fire extinguishant into a stream of fluid fuel in a conduit, e.g. an oil-well head pipe, comprises needle valve member 25 urged by spring 31 on to seat 32, chamber 34 surrounding needle 25 upstream of seat 32 into which ducts 35 conduct the extinguishant tangentially to the walls, and an hydraulic circuit including piston 19 subject to the pressure in the conduit and operable to exert a force on needle 25 in the same direction as spring 31 and proportional to the conduit pressure. The injector 2 has threaded ring 13 screwed into recess 14 in a bore in tube 1. Cylindrical element 15 is mounted in ring 13 and leaves passage 16 for extinguishant introduced into chamber 6, seal 17 sealing off 16 from the interior of 1. Cylinder 15 houses element 18 having two bores, the first receiving end part 19a of piston 19, and the second a layer part 19b. Piston end 19c which is larger again moves in a bore in 15 containing hydraulic fluid. Seals 20, 21, isolate the hydraulic fluid from the fuel. Ducts 22, 23 supply the hydraulic fluid to chamber 24 behind valve needle 25, bolts 26, 27 with seals 29, 30 closing duct 23 and chamber 24 and permitting introduction and drainage of the fluid. Ducts 35 connect chamber 34 to passage 16 and extinguishant supply. If flame occurs in body 1 a pressure prevails therein whereas chamber 6 is not under pressure; piston 19 therefore communicates a proportional force to face 49 of valve 25, augmenting that applied by the spring, and member 25 bears harder on seat 32. If the extinguishant pressure in 6 increases while the oil pressure is constant, the pressure in chamber 34 exerts an opposing force on valve needle 25; when it exceeds that exerted by the spring and hydraulic fluid, valve 25 is lifted from seat 32 and the extinguishant flows into the oil conduit. The injector provides a spray jet with high axial impetus.
