Abstract
1342960 Polyhydroxylic monosulphoxides L OREAL 12 May 1971 [12 May 1970] 14578/71 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions A5 B1 C5 and D1] Novel mixtures of compounds of formula where R is C 8-22 aliphatic hydrocarbyl optionally substituted by hydroxy, or a C 8-22 cycloaliphatic or araliphatic group and n has a statistical average greater than 1 but not greater than 10, are prepared by reacting with n moles of glycidol and oxidizing the resulting thioether to the sulphoxide. The compounds II may be prepared by reacting RSH with glycidol in equimolar amounts with or without subsequent isolation. The products are surfactants. Tetradecylmercaptan is prepared by reacting the corresponding α-olefin with thioacetic acid in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile followed by treatment with NaOH. Octadecylmercaptan is prepared by reacting octadecyl bromide and thiourea followed by hydrolysis with NaOH. Dodecylbenzylmercaptan is prepared similarly from dodecylbenzyl chloride and purified via its cadmium salt C 12-15 - alkyl-S-CH 2 CHOHCH 2 OH is prepared by reacting C 12-15 alkanol with methane sulphochloride followed by condensation with thioglycerol. Oleyl-SCH 2 CHOHCH 2 OH is prepared similarly.
